“Conscience of a Hacker” essay

We are living in a generation full of technology which has increased tremendously over the past years. In the story “Conscience of a Hacker” by The Mentor, he shows us what he wants us to understand from his experience of technology, and how as students we are curious about things. He also gives us evidence that happened when technology was evolving into something greater. Also the author is showing his experience by his way of writing style and I will include my experience towards school.
The author wants his readers to understand that his generations is living a world of technology and how nobody can stop them. “I made a discovery today. I found a computer. . . it does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it’s because I screwed it up” (par. 5 lines 22-26). This shows what the first thing was used that started everything, and what most people thought when they started to use something so fascinating to them.. “And then it happened. . . a door opened to a world. . . rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addicts veins, an electronic pulse is sent out . . .” (par. 7 lines 31-35). This revels how something so simple about how technology works makes our lives so much simple and easy. “This is it. . . this is where I belong. . .” I know everyone here even if I’ve never met them, never talked to them again. . . I know you all. . .” ( par. 8 lines 38-41). This revels how things changed before there was any technology. Also that we don’t need to be “alike” to understand someone and how they think the way they do. The author wants everyone to know that students were fascinated by the technology, and that they were their to discover something that is important to us in present day.
The author tells us different examples about the way he sees things and why technology is useful.“This is our world now. . . the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud” (par. 10 lines 53-55). This explains how the world we live in has shown different ways, that we as people have changed our ways of living today. “We seek after knowledge. . . and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias. . . and you call us criminals” (par. 10 lines 46-50). This is shows how the author is explaining why being curious about technology isn’t a bad thing. He is also showing that technology is here to help everyone and not to hurt anybody. “I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can’t stop us all. . . after all, we’re all alike”(par.12 lines 76-78). He is reveling how nobody can stop students from becoming more aware about how technology functions, to make better discoveries. The author wants whoever is reading his story and whenever to understand the greatness about students and technology.
The author has a great way of showing his experience by his writing style. “Damn kids. They’re all alike” (par.1 line 5). The author uses this phrase throughout his story, this shows what all teachers say when students start to get curious over something or even when they start to succeed. “The few that has something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert” (par. 9 lines 50-52). The author is using a metaphor to show not all teachers were willing to see their students succeed by not helping nor teaching them. Although, there were some helpful ones however, they were rear to find. “I’m smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me”(par. 3 lines 12-14). “You bet your ass we’re all alike. . .” (par.9 lines 44). This is the authors way to express himself by using words like “bet your ass” and “crap”. The author gave good reasoning to show that students are capable to achieve whatever they want and why technology has become something important to us today. My experience towards school was when I was in middle school. One day I had my homework out while my partner was doing hers right before the teacher was going to collect it, while he was coming he noticed she was writing and he came over and thought I was letting her copy. However  she wasn’t even coping and we were trying to explain to him the situation, but he didn’t believe us so he tore our papers and didn’t give up credit. The words and descriptions used throughout the story gives us good examples about how teachers are like and how technology has changed over time and the greatness of it.
By this story the author wants everyone to know the students point of view and that technology will make things better, which I believe did. The author showed experiences from others to make a clear statement about people being curious and wanting to make technology evolve. With the curiosity of things we in present day are able to do things,  people back then would be amazed to look at. Now  students are able to express themselves a bit more than before and are heard in many other ways.

A BRAVE NEW END OF THE WORLD

Two big ideas I got by reading the ending of Brave New World is that people always get caught up in society and what others think. People can not be taken seriously about their feeling because others won’t understand them, or it’s something they have never felt before so others don’t know how to react.

MY BEST WRITING

I have a writer’s conference coming up with Dr. Preston, and I am excited to go over my final essay and my big question research posts. I chose these two pieces for specific reasons because I feel like I did my best writing on these posts.
